Smell! Sense number one was a big hit! We loved exploring all kinds of smells and guessing what some were. Throughout the day we tried lots of herbs, both fresh and dry. "It smells like pasta" someone said, yum! "It's spicy like an avocado!" "Avocado isn't spicy, chili is!" We tried a few great baking related smells - vanilla essence, cocoa, cinnamon, cloves (ground and whole), coffee, and raspberry essence. "It smells like maple syrup!" "It's coffee!" "It smells like lollies!" We sniffed teas and talked about how our nose works with our brain to process smells. We also used it to take big breaths! Some tamariki took their explanations very seriously and brought the clipboards over for notes! At the end of the day we used the raspberry essence and cocoa we had been smelling to mix into our playdough! "It smells like chocolate!" "It's like a cake!" What an awesome way to learn! Kai pai to mahi tamariki, way to go!
